Ethereum postpones Glamsterdam upgrade on Hoodi testnet over contract risk

Ethereum developers called off the Glamsterdam activation on the Hoodi testnet, scheduled for Oct. 26, after CoinDesk reported security concerns about how new gas rules could affect existing smart contracts. ChainSecurity said it found 13 real-world examples of contracts potentially affected by the gas changes and is coordinating responsible disclosure, per Cointelegraph. A planned gas limit increase to 200 million was also postponed.

Claims and open questions

What sources claim

  • CoinDesk reported that developers postponed the Hoodi activation during Thursday's All Core Devs Execution meeting to investigate how EIP-8037, a gas accounting change, interacts with contracts already running on mainnet.
  • CoinDesk reported that ChainSecurity's Oct. 13 analysis showed that, combined with EIP-8038, creating a new storage slot could require 110,020 gas when a separate allowance is exhausted, compared with 22,100 under the old rules.
  • Cointelegraph reported that ChainSecurity identified 13 real-world examples of smart contracts potentially affected by Glamsterdam's gas changes and is coordinating responsible disclosure with affected projects.

Still unresolved

  • When developers will reschedule the Hoodi activation and the accompanying increase of the testnet gas limit to 200 million, and what fix or mitigation they adopt, would be confirmed by an official All Core Devs statement or Ethereum Foundation notice.
  • Whether any of the 13 examples flagged by ChainSecurity involve a major production protocol that is actually exploitable, beyond the demonstrated mechanism, would be confirmed by ChainSecurity's disclosure or affected-project statements.
