Ripple Prime adds weekend stock, commodity and currency swaps for institutions

Ripple Prime, the brokerage formerly known as Hidden Road, now lets institutional clients trade swaps tied to more than 100 markets, including shares, commodities and currencies, Ripple said in its October 15 announcement. Clients can post the RLUSD stablecoin as collateral, and trading firm Virtu is already using the service, according to CoinDesk. HSBC's Daragh Maher called the launch "evolutionary, not revolutionary" in a note to clients, warning weekend liquidity may stay thin.

Claims and open questions

What sources claim

  • Ripple said in its October 15 announcement that Ripple Prime clients can trade swaps tied to more than 100 markets, including shares, commodities and currencies, and that trading firm Virtu is already using the service, CoinDesk reported.
  • HSBC's Daragh Maher wrote in a note to clients that the launch is "evolutionary, not revolutionary" and that early activity is more likely to be concentrated among market makers, proprietary traders and hedge funds pursuing basis trades until trading depth develops, CoinDesk reported.
  • CoinDesk reported that nearly $52 million in leveraged chip-stock positions were forcibly closed in 10 minutes on a Saturday as selling spread from Binance to Hyperliquid, while the underlying shares were not trading.

Still unresolved

  • How much client volume or collateral Ripple Prime has attracted; Ripple has named an early customer but has not disclosed the size of the business, and figures from Ripple or a customer would confirm it.
  • Which jurisdictions beyond the British Virgin Islands license Ripple plans to add for the swaps offering, and on what timeline, which Ripple would need to state.
