Start with the move you are trying to explain

A useful answer to “why is crypto moving?” starts with a measured observation. Record the asset, trading venue, quote currency and interval. A five-minute SOL/USDT move on one exchange and a rolling 24-hour SOL/USD change are different observations. Write down both endpoint times before looking for a headline.

Use the same venue and quote currency throughout the comparison. If an endpoint is missing, leave the return unavailable. Substituting a price from another venue can introduce a difference that belongs to the data collection rather than the asset’s move.

Compare Bitcoin before calling a move coin specific

Measure BTC over the same interval. If an asset and BTC both rose, the broader market is relevant context. If their returns differ, that difference is an observation to investigate. It does not identify the cause of the difference.

For a hypothetical one-hour observation, SOL rising 3% while BTC rises 2% means SOL outperformed BTC by one percentage point. It does not mean news caused that extra point. Assets have different historical relationships with BTC, and those relationships can change.

Our hourly-return study compares BTC, ETH, SOL and DOGE using matching OKX spot timestamps. It explains why a fixed percentage move has different historical context for different assets. Its hourly beta estimates cannot be applied directly to a minute-level alert or treated as a forecast.

Check what the original source actually confirms

Follow a report back to the announcement, filing or project statement it cites. Check the asset, affected product, market and effective date. A futures listing is not a spot listing; a proposal is not a completed action. The explanation should preserve those distinctions.

Count independent evidence rather than repeated headlines. Several outlets can repeat one announcement. An official source establishes what the issuer or exchange said; it does not independently verify every claim or establish a price effect.

Keep publication and detection on separate clocks

Record when the original source says it published, when a collector first saw it, when the announced action takes effect and when the price was observed. A site’s first detection is not the time the whole market learned the information. Preserve the time zone and the precision of each timestamp.

Our announcement timestamp audit shows why this matters: a saved archive can contain clustered metadata dates that need further checking against the underlying documents. A date without a time cannot support a minute-by-minute causal sequence. Prices measured after collection describe a post-detection window, not necessarily a post-publication window.

Write an explanation that keeps observation and interpretation separate

A practical format is: the asset moved by a measured amount over a specified interval; BTC moved by its own measured amount; a named source reported a specific development at a recorded time; that development is possible context, with any timing or coverage gap stated beside it.

When the source appears after the move, check for earlier public information before using it as the explanation. When several developments overlap, retain the alternatives. If no verified catalyst is available, report the observed move and say the catalyst remains unconfirmed.

WhyCoinMoves uses source links, market observations and revisions to make those checks inspectable. Its evidence labels describe source coverage, and its importance labels help readers prioritise reports. Neither is a probability that a story is true. The linked methods page explains the current collection and publication rules.

Can a crypto price rise without a confirmed news catalyst?

Yes. A measured price move does not require a verified news explanation to be reported. Check the broader market, the observation window and available sources; if the evidence does not identify a catalyst, keep that part of the answer unresolved.

Does a price move after an announcement prove the announcement caused it?

No. The sequence may support an explanation, but anticipation, overlapping information and market-wide moves remain possible. A causal study needs a defined event sample, reliable time alignment and an explicit comparison; a nearby headline alone does not supply them.

Limitations

This is a reading guide synthesising existing WhyCoinMoves methods and research, not a new event study. The SOL and BTC percentage example is hypothetical. The checks help assess an explanation; they do not identify every catalyst or predict subsequent returns.

Sources and data access

Cited sources document external facts or data formats; they do not endorse our findings. The public snapshot contains the table and methods. Source-file fingerprints are included for recalculated datasets. Full archived raw files are not distributed here; fingerprints identify the files used, rather than independently proving the results.
